Who are Girls Like You?
Through various conversations, I’m often asked, “What is your why?”
Simply stated, “My why is and has always been because of girls like me!”
Okay, okay so what exactly are girls like me?
Who are girls like me?
More importantly, why are girls like me?
You see girls like me, have encountered tremendous obstacles, barriers of great heights, feelings of being scared, alone and confused. Girls like me have indulged in activities that may not be in their best interest… YES, those activities… sex, alcohol, and drugs! Girls like me have had thoughts about death, times of depression, and feeling like being themselves isn’t enough.
Yes, my why and is and has always been because of girls like me! Instructing in the classrooms in the inner city of Cleveland, I was able to teach girls like me. Sitting behind the principal desk I was able to guide girls like me. All different but yet so much alike.
Before writing this BLOG post I listened to Maroon 5 song, “Girls Like You,” and while the words may take on a different context the images resonated with me. The video displayed various women, all colors, shapes, and sizes, all having the commonality of wanting the same thing.
Think about that…
No matter the differences the needs are equal! The surface characteristics, traits, or features, have no bearing. Even given the scenarios that have sprinkled and scarred our lives we all want the same basic things, love, success, happiness, peace, and security. Although this may look different to different people the base of these common needs is the same.
The problem becomes when we don’t have the means to access those basic entities, and not having access can be present for many different reasons. As a young girl, I didn’t understand that my access road was going to be a little more difficult given the heavy stones I was carrying, that by the way, I didn’t ask for! I didn’t know that my thought process would have to be more advanced so I wouldn’t let the weight of the stones keep me stuck without the ability to move. Ultimately, what I didn’t know is that the stones given to me would grow to be unbearable if I continued to consciously add to them!
My why, is simply because of GIRLS LIKE ME…I am determined to keep the access road open so girls can transition without hesitation. I’m determined to help bridge over the rocky paths so they keep pushing forward without getting deterred or frustrated. More importantly, I am willing to help them carry their stones they didn’t ask for so the weight of life doesn’t keep them stuck.
I know my why!
Every girl has a story currently being written and every woman has a story that she adding pages to daily.
So I’m asking girls, “Who are you?
I’m asking women, “Who are the girls like you that will know your memoir, and your story was written for them?”
